Power-Up #5: The decision you've been avoiding

THE FOUNDER'S CLASSROOM

Hey Reader,

Fab here, back with Power-Up #5.

Quick heads-up before we start: I'm running Get Unstuck Live in November and December. It's a 2-hour workshop for 5 people where we plan together and untangle the decision you keep going round in circles on.

There's more below, and you can book your spot here if you'd like to join me.

Earlier this year I was seriously playing catch-up. Somewhere between deciding what should go in my daughter's nursery bag and when her bedtime should be, it hit me that I was treating every single decision as equally important.

What to post, which client to take on, whether to answer that email.

Most of them didn't matter.

A few shaped the whole year, and most of my stress came from the small ones I thought did.

Nat Eliason's idea is that you only need to make four great decisions a year. I think of them as the big directional choices: what you work on, who you work with and how you spend your time. Read his post here.โ€‹

Power-Up #5: find the decision you've been avoiding

Set a 10-minute timer and answer these three questions in a line each. Don't edit yourself.

  1. What do I keep moving to next week's list, no matter what? This is usually the decision you've been avoiding. A task that never gets done is often a decision in disguise.
  2. What would my future self thank me for deciding today? This is the one that will still matter in six months.
  3. If I could outsource one thing next week, what would it be? This shows you what's draining you. It points to something to hand off, or at least to decide who should take it.

Now look across your three answers. The decision you're after is usually where two of them point at the same thing.

If you've written it down and still can't see which way to go, that's exactly what Get Unstuck Live is for. It's 2 hours with 5 people at ยฃ130 each, and we work through your decision together. Book your spotโ€‹

How To Actually Do This

Say your answers are rewriting your pricing page, launching the higher-priced offer, and building the new pricing page. All three point at pricing, so your one decision becomes: "Do I launch the higher-priced offer in January or March? Decide by Friday."

If nothing overlaps, go with your answer to question 1, because it's the one costing you the most.

Before you commit, run your decision through three questions:

  • Will this matter in six months? If not, make a quick call and move on.
  • Can it be delegated, automated or eliminated? If yes, do that instead of deciding.
  • Neither? Set a 10-minute timer and decide.

Step-By-Step Process

  1. Set a 10-minute timer.
  2. Answer the three questions in a line each, without editing yourself.
  3. Read your answers and find the thing that appears in two or more of them. If nothing does, use your answer to question 1.
  4. Write it as one question with two options, and add the date you'll decide by.
  5. Run it through the three questions above.
  6. Still going round in circles? Bring it to Get Unstuck Live and we'll untangle it together.

Which decision keeps showing up in your answers?

Always cheering you on
